Questions
Is 20% a normal tip in the US?
For sit-down restaurant service, 15% to 20% of the bill before tax is the common range in US etiquette guides, and many people tip 20%. You can always tip more for great service.
Do I tip on takeout?
It's not expected. Etiquette guides suggest about 10% if someone brings it out to your car or the order is large.
What if a service charge is already on the bill?
A service charge may or may not go to the staff. Ask if you're not sure, and only add a tip on top if you want to.
