Split a bill by items
An even split isn't fair when one person had a salad and another had steak and two drinks. This itemized bill splitter adds up what each person ordered. Shared plates are split evenly between the people who ticked them.
Tax and tip are shared in proportion to each person's items, so someone whose food came to a third of the bill pays a third of the tax and tip. Each amount is rounded up to the next cent so the check is always covered.
Example
Three friends share an $18 appetizer. Alex has a $24 entree, Sam a $16 one and Jo a $12 salad, and Alex and Sam split a $15 bottle of wine. That's $85.00 before tax, plus $7.65 tax and a 20% tip of $17.00, for $109.65 in all.
Alex pays $48.38, Sam pays $38.06 and Jo pays $23.22. That adds up to $109.66, so $0.01 is left over after the check is paid.
Questions
How are tax and tip split?
In proportion to what each person ordered. If your items are 40% of the food and drink, you pay 40% of the tax and the tip.
How do I split a shared appetizer?
Tick everyone who shared it. The price is divided evenly between them.
Why is there money left over?
Each person's amount is rounded up to the next cent, so the total collected can be a few cents more than the check. Those cents can go on the tip.
